If you’re familiar with QuickSilver (Mac) or Launchy (Windows), you will find Gnome Do is really easy to use. Even more, Gnome Do also supports a lot of useful plugins. Check it out at Gnome-Do Homagepage

2. Firefox

Come to Firefox, there are few tricks that you can use to increase productivity as well. Can’t imagine a day without CyberSearch, Adblock and NoScript

3. Workspace – How many ?

As a normal user, i would say the default value (2) is a good number. I, myself, choose 4 because i love multitasking and a 17 inches screen doesn’t seem to be big enough for me.

4. Nautilus

Grab some useful scripts for you at Gnome-Look.Org and come to Nautilus Script section. I can’t say which one is useful coz it’s vary depend on your needs.

deborphan finds “orphaned” packages on your system. It determines which packages have no other packages depending on their installation and shows you a list of these packages. It is most useful when finding libraries, but it can be used on packages in all sections.

1. To install deborphan:

sudo apt-get install deborphan

- Alternative, there is also a GUI package known as GtkOrphan. The choice is yours =P. Well, i prefer the non-GUI package.

sudo apt-get install gtkorphan

2. To list out all packages that ain’t required by any other package:

deborphan –guess-all

3. To remove those packages, simply issue the command

sudo deborphan –guess-all | xargs sudo apt-get -y remove –purge

P/S: Another way to clean patial and orphaned packages is sudo apt-get autoclean and sudo apt-get autoremove

It was pretty easy. What you need to do is just that
- collect all the icons you want, put them in a folder. For Yahoo Emoticons, you can get it from here
- in that folder, create a file with name “theme”

The content of that file should be:
Name=Name_Of_The_Theme
Description=Theme_Description
Icon=Theme_Icon_File.png
Author=Your_Name
[Yahoo]

- The last line i put [Yahoo] because i wanna make emoticons theme for Yahoo. You can put MSN or AIM there depends on your IM Protocol.
- Next line, you gonna have to map which emoticon should be mapped with which keys combination as the format below.

- When you’re done, save it. Compress that folder for example mysmileys.tar.gz

- Open Pidgin Preferences -> Smiley Themes and drop mysmileys.tar.gz there. Select it and click OK.
Enj0y with the new emoticons theme.

1. Download a file: wget http://www.example.com/myfile.zip

2. Keep continue downloading file even after disruption: wget -c http://www.example.com/myfile.zip

3. Some sites do not allow download accelerator/manager, you can try adding ‘-U mozilla‘ parameter. This will pass wget as being a Mozilla Web Browser. wget -U mozilla http://www.example.com/myfile.zip

4. Limit download speed by providing ‘–limit-rate=100K‘ for example. This will limit the download speed to 100Kb/s
wget –limit-rate=100K http://www.example.com/myfile.zip

5. Continue downloading after logging out: wget -b http://www.example.com/myfile.zip
This is kinda useful in case you connect to your home PC using SSH

This is just a short tutorial. For the full manual, you can try issuing “man wget” in the terminal.

e.g. : I want to uninstall TumblWeed App. So i typed in my terminal:

dpkg –list | grep -i tumblweed
2. The result after the above command look like this:
ii  com.adobe.example.tumblweed.4de7482c14055ead00e76b98c6c45679e421790b.1 1.03                                         A Tumblr desktop client for those that can’t blah blah ….

The bold name above is the actual package name.
3. It’s easy now. You can simply uninstall the package by typing in your terminal:
sudo dpkg -r ‘com.adobe.example.tumblweed.4de7482c14055ead00e76b98c6c45679e421790b.1‘

Done !!!

- Add this two to Software Sources. ( System -> Administration -> Software Sources)
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/c-korn/vlc/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/c-korn/vlc/ubuntu jaunty main

- Open Terminal:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-esd mozilla-plugin-vlc

To install gvim: sudo aptitude install gvim ( Or you can use GUI Add/Remove Applications and search for gvim )

To install cream, download the .deb file from its homepage

Firefox 3.5 offers several special characters that filter the smart address bar’s drop-down suggestions to page titles, your history, your bookmarks, or your tags.

- Filter by search only in history: ^

- Search bookmark *

- Tagged pages: +

- Keywords match URL @

- Keywords match Title/Tags: #

Let’s take an example: To search a page with keyword “kemsiro” in title/URL in your history, you can query “kemsiro ^“. This will returns any page that has “kemsiro” in title/URL eg. kemsiro.wordpress.com or twitter.com/kemsiro in your history

You can also mix the operators as well. Let’s say i wanna query for those pages that have “ubuntu” in URL in my bookmarks, i will have to type “ubuntu @ *“

Pretty simple and straight forward huh?

Bonus: To limit the number of suggested pages, you can type “about:config” and search for maxRichResult, change the value to how many suggested pages you want.

- Go to Firefox Homepage to grab the latest version of Firefox.

- Now go to terminal and type in the following commands

cp -R ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla.backup
sudo tar -jxvf firefox-3.5.tar.bz2 -C /opt
sudo mv /opt/firefox/plugins /opt/firefox/plugins.backup
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/plugins /opt/firefox/plugins
sudo dpkg-divert –divert /usr/bin/firefox.ubuntu –rename /usr/bin/firefox
sudo ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefox

Done!! Your new firefox should be running properly by now.
